ISO 14001 Environmental Management
What is it?
ISO 14001 is an international voluntary Environmental Management System (EMS) that is becoming increasingly necessary for the management of companies and organisations. This system combines the care of the environment and the reduction of pollution – given the pressure of the Administration, customers, and society in general in this regard – with the improvement of the economic performance – since costs are reduced, it gives access to a greater number of subsidies, and productivity is improved.
The EMS, in outline, includes the organisational structure of the company, the procedures/practices, responsibilities, and the processes to be implemented or reviewed. The compliance with the standard positions the company as a committed and socially responsible entity, and offers a positive and trustworthy image to the business world.
In addition to the standard ISO 14001, there is a supplement for companies that want to go one step further: EMAS or Eco-Management and Audit Scheme. It is a standard for those companies that want to continuously improve their EMS and verify it with an audit that results in an Environmental Declaration – a public document detailing the environmental policies that are applied and the results of these.
